Everything Is Miscellaneous
David Weinberger's new book is out
Nine years in production and featuring a cast of thousands, Everything Is Miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder has finally hit the stands. In reference to bloggers he hopes will review it, Weinberger asks: "Do you know how different it is to write a book when your readers can talk back?" Then answers himself: "It's thrilling." Now, I know David well enough to be able to translate this. He's terrified.

But of course he needn't be. At Boing Boing, Cory Doctorow opens his review -- Everything is Miscellaneous - how the Web destroys categories, disciplines and hierarchies -- with this brilliant summation.

David Weinberger's "Everything is Miscellaneous" is the kind of book that binds together innumerable miscellaneous threads and makes something new, coherent, and incontrovertible out of them. Weinberger's thesis is this: historically, we've divided the world into categories, topics, and hierarchies because physical objects need to be in one place or another, they can't be in all the places they might belong. Computers and the Internet turn this on its head: because a computer can "put things" in as many categories as they need to be in, because individuals can classify knowledge, tasks, and objects idiosyncratically, the hierarchy is revealed for what it always was, a convenient expedient masquerading as the True Shape of the Universe. [more]
David had his publisher send me a copy of Miscellaneous so I could write my own brilliant review, but the dog ate my homework. Well no, not exactly. I don't have a dog. Or any homework. What really happened is that my car broke down last week -- something about a "timing harness" and some bent valves -- and I only just got it back. So I haven't been able to go to the main post office in Boulder where David's book is no doubt waiting to be picked up. And the reason I have to do that is that my local post office -- only a few blocks away -- is closed for "asbestos remediation." I suspect the real reason has more to do with the anthrax spores readers were sending me, but perhaps that's just my own paranoia. Anyway, as I can't really review the book here yet, I thought I'd at least write something miscellaneous (how'm I doing?) and simply tell you all: go get your own damn copy! (Or go win one.)

Thank you.

Until a minute ago, I had no photos. I still have no photos to speak of. I don't even have a camera. But all these people were linking to "my photos." It was embarassing. It's still embarassing. But I'm used to that.
