IT'S COOL...
to know nothin'

Marcus Brown is turning in some of the finest, most important culture criticism being produced today. And he's doing it as pure parody. On a video blog. With an ever ingratiating smile. That truly is, as he would say, remarkable! Only, when he says it, he's kidding. I'm not.

But perhaps I should first back up a bit.

In one of those perversely inexplicable instances of random-ass synchronicity, I discovered a song today called Never Miss A Beat. It's my favorite new tune-cum-video (one is severely diminished without the other), and if you click the link, you'll quickly see from whence my oddly apt title slug derived.

The synchronicity involves the name of the band, The Kaiser Chiefs, and Marcus Brown, who styles himself The Kaiser -- possibly because he appears to live in Munich, though this may be pure conjecture on my part. What is certain is that The Kaiser Chiefs and The Kaiser/Marcus Brown have nothing whatsoever in common other than the fact that they were simultaneously occupying my head this morning. Well... that and the haunting possibility that the song is the perfect soundtrack to what Brown is savaging in his brilliant parodies: people who know nothing but shamelessly parade their vapid self-importance as if it's cool. He says it with a smile. I can't.

Harsh as I may sound in this, I think I'm qualified to say it. As The Cluetrain Manifesto figures in the first frame of his first video, I'm not entirely exempt from the critique.

Other than mentioning the fact that all these Twitter readings -- for that's what they are -- are delivered from Marcus Brown's personal throne room, occasionally accompanied by a literally fundamental punctuation, there's nothing I can say here that would add to the experience. Just go watch the whole set. I know you've heard me say it before, but this time, really: you'll thank me. If you don't die laughing first.

And I beg you... no, I implore you: follow Marcus. It could just change your life!

Until a minute ago, I had no photos. I still have no photos to speak of. I don't even have a camera. But all these people were linking to "my photos." It was embarassing. It's still embarassing. But I'm used to that.
